Industrial & Rental Equipment Tracking:
Asset Trackers & RTLS

Industrial Equipment | Industrial Containers | Portable Storage Units | Waste Bins
Scrap Bins | Totes | Portable Toilets | Portakabins | Mobile Office Units | Plant Machinery

Tracking industrial equipment, containers and valuable tooling is to ensure every asset is in the right place for efficient operations, logistics and security, is critical.  The loss or theft of a single piece of equipment, or skip contents, could result in a significant financial hit for a business.

The cost of losses or assets being in the wrong place is high for equipment rental companies too. Time in transit, rental under false identities and renters not securing equipment adequately are all factors that make it easy for thieves to target rental equipment.

2025 saw a surge in equipment theft in the UK.  In the construction sector alone, theft increased by nearly 20% compared to the previous year, as high-value tools and machinery have become increasingly attractive targets.  Common targets include excavators, generators, pumps, power tools and plant machinery because they are easy to re-sell.

The cost of stolen equipment in this sector now exceeds £1 billion. Once you factor in replacement costs, project delays, lost business and higher insurance premiums, the business impact is breathtaking.

Other industries are at risk too. The healthcare sector and events industries are other examples with high asset losses due to theft with items from medical beds and ventilators to audio equipment and lighting, all prime targets for criminals.

RTLS and active tracking how offers operators reduced risk with automated, real-time visibility of equipment whereabouts.

Key Challenges When Tracking Industrial & Rental Equipment

  • How do I reduce theft and loss of equipment?
  • How do I track equipment and containers left unattended at multiple locations?
  • Someone’s moved the kit but I don’t know where?
  • We’re not optimising usage for our equipment because we don’t have an up-to-date view of what we have available, or items nearby, how can we solve this?
  • How can I get visibility of all items so that I know I can get them in place for a project?
  • Our manual process is taking too long, reliant on people at the item and the location is often out-of-date by the time it’s reported.
  • How do we optimise operations by knowing where things are and getting the right equipment in the right place?

Active Tracking Systems for Real Time Location Tracking

Assettrac works with its key technology partner, Teltonika to provide clients with battery-powered asset trackers that can provide periodic location reports, giving organisations automated and secure monitoring of items.

The Teltonika TAT240 is regularly used to monitor construction skips, waste bins, portable storage and other industrial containers. It is a GPS tracking device that provides regular location reports, giving businesses accurate visibility of their equipment locations.

Teltonika TAT 240 - How It Works

TAT240 model features configurable location reporting settings that include:

  • Movement-based tracking, allowing companies to set the tracker to report more frequently when items are moving and less frequently when they are stationary.
  • Scheduled tracking, allowing companies to select specific times and days to track, such as every working day at 11am and 4pm.
  • Movement events, which allow a location event to be received when the container starts or stops moving, informing an operator/manager of the movement and location. This means the person in charge can take immediate action if the container is being moved, when it shouldn’t be.
  • Smart features – battery lifetime extension depending on the chosen tracking scenario.
  • Periodic location reports – TAT240 tracker provides regular updates on container locations for improved security and management.
  • On-time construction projects – having the required equipment on time helps prevent project delays, saving businesses significant costs.
  • Efficient recovery – location data helps to quickly recover stolen containers.
  • Configurable reporting – customisable intervals based on your operation to optimise battery life.
  • Tamper detection – alert users of asset tracker removal events, increasing security.
  • Easy installation – TAT240 model is quickly and securely installed using the supplied magnetic holder.

TAT 240 for Industrial Equipment Tracking: Skip Rental Company

A skip rental company was struggling to keep track of their 50 recycling skips on construction sites. This lack of visibility meant real-time service delays and the potential of theft which was affecting their business operations and bottom line.

By installing the TAT240 asset tracker on each skip, the company was able to track their items using the scheduler feature.  As  a GPS device, they were configured to send two location updates per day, providing managers with accurate morning and evening skip location updates.  The tamper detection feature helped to mitigate against theft, providing additional peace of mind.
